The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening telemedicine and digital health innovation as central strategies toward achieving Universal Health Coverage and equitable healthcare access across Nigeria. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, gave the assurance while speaking at Nigerian Telehealth Conference 2025

Speaking on the theme scaling Telehealth for Universal Coverage in Nigeria: Pathway to Sustainability, the Minister of State for Health: Dr. Iziaq Salako, said the event marked a milestone in Nigeria’s quest to leverage technology for improved national health outcomes and service delivery.

Dr. Salako, who was represented at the event by Special Adviser on Digital Health, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Leke Ojewale, stated that the Federal Ministry of Health remained dedicated to reducing physical and financial barriers while expanding access to quality healthcare and saving lives in underserved areas nationwide.

Salako said deliberations from the conference would inform the forthcoming National Telehealth Sustainability Framework, expected to be presented at the National Council on Health later in November. The Convener and the Chief Executive Officer, Mobihealth International, Dr. Funmi Adewara disclosed that despite the fact that healthcare remains a fundamental right, millions of Nigerians have no access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare.

Key Stakeholders at the conference in their presentations highlighted progress and future strategies in Nigeria and the way forward. They posited that the framework will serve as a blueprint for integrating telemedicine into Nigeria’s health system, addressing standards, financing, digital infrastructure, and workforce readiness nationwide.
